How to Get a Fair Trade-In Offer in Surrey and Langley

How to Get a Fair Trade-In Offer in Surrey and Langley

Short answer: To get a fair trade-in offer, know your car’s market range, bring the service records and both keys, have your loan payout details ready, fix only the cheap things, and be upfront about its history. Compare a private sale on the net result, including tax: a trade-in may reduce the PST you pay on your next car.

Your current car is usually the biggest number in the deal after the price of the next one. A good trade-in offer can be worth more than any discount, so it pays to prepare. Here’s how to get a fair offer on your trade-in in Surrey, Langley and the Fraser Valley, and how to judge it against selling privately.

1. Know what your car is actually worth

Look up comparable cars for sale: same model, similar year, kilometres, trim and options. Asking prices aren’t selling prices, but they give you a realistic range. Remember that a dealer’s offer reflects what it costs them to inspect, recondition, warranty and resell the car, so it will sit below retail asking prices.

2. Gather the paperwork

  • Service records. A documented history is one of the easiest ways to support a stronger offer, especially on luxury and performance cars.
  • Both keys, the manuals and any accessories that came with the car.
  • Your loan or lease details. If you still owe money on the car, have your lender’s payout information ready. The lien gets paid out as part of the trade.
  • Your registration and insurance papers.

3. Fix the cheap things, skip the expensive ones

A professional detail, a burnt-out bulb or a missing badge are small fixes that change a first impression. Big repairs rarely pay back before a trade-in: you’ll usually spend more than the value they add. Just be upfront about them.

4. Be honest about the history

Accidents, claims and import history show up on a CARFAX Canada report, so the buyer will see them anyway. Telling them upfront keeps the offer from changing at the last minute.

5. Compare a trade-in with a private sale properly

A private sale can bring a higher price, but it isn’t free money. Weigh it against:

  • Tax. The province’s PST bulletin says the value of a trade-in may reduce the taxable purchase price of the vehicle you’re buying. On a luxury car, where PST can run from 7% to 20%, that can make a meaningful difference. We explain the rates in our PST guide.
  • Time and risk. Listings, calls, no-shows, test drives with strangers and being paid safely.
  • Your loan. Selling privately with money still owing means arranging the payout yourself.

Compare the net position of each option, not just the headline price.

6. Get the offer in writing

Ask how long the offer is good for and what could change it. A fair dealer will tell you exactly what the number is based on.

How trading in or selling to EMG works

You don’t have to be buying from us to sell us your car. Tell us about it on our Sell / Trade page and we’ll reply with a fair market offer within 24 hours, usually within a few. The inspection takes 30 to 45 minutes at our Fraser Hwy showroom, or we can come to you in Langley and the Fraser Valley. If you accept, you’re paid the same day by cheque or bank transfer, or the value goes toward your next car, and we pay out any lien directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trade in a car I still owe money on?

Yes. The dealer pays out your lender as part of the trade. Any difference is applied to your next car or paid to you.

Does EMG buy cars without a purchase?

Yes. There’s no requirement to buy from us. Accept the offer and you’re paid the same day.

How fast can I get an offer?

We reply within 24 hours, usually within a few hours. The inspection itself takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Is it better to trade in or sell privately?

A private sale can bring a higher price, but compare the net result: the time and risk involved, your loan payout, and the possible PST saving from a trade-in.
